Has anyone heard anything about this and whether schools are asking questions about one's OPT work?

Technically, if I understand this, one is 'out of status' if one cannot find employment under F-1 OPT within 90 days, or during the OPT period did not work for 90 days.

The issue is what happens when one wants to change to H1b status or continue under a new F-1 program (obtaining a new SEVIS I-20).
