M-1 And OPT Students Portal Launched

On March 23, 2018, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) launched the SEVP Portal for F-1 students participating in post-completion optional practical training (OPT) and M-1 students participating in practical training.

Overview

The SEVP Portal is a salient tool which allows F-1 students on post-completion OPT and M-1 visa participating in practical training meet their legal reporting requirements.

The portal will allow these students to report personal and employer information directly to SEVP. Through this portal, the students will be able to:

1. Add or edit their phone number.
2. Add or edit their mailing and physical address.
3. Add or edit their employer information.

The portal and SEVIS regularly share data. Data entered into the portal is sent immediately to SEVIS to update the student’s record. However, information comes from SEVIS to the portal once a day. Any updates to a student’s record in SEVIS will appear in the SEVP Portal the next day.

Exception

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) OPT student trainees will be unable to edit their own employer information. The Form I-983, “Training Plan for STEM OPT Students,” instructs the student’s DSO (Designated School Official) to add employer information.

The eligible students should confirm with their DSO that they have an updated personal email address in the SEVIS. Please note that although the SEVP Portal will interface with SEVIS, it will not allow the students a direct access to the system or result in DSOs losing any SEVIS functionality.
